State of Ohio defined Pharmacy internship as the “supervised practical experience for licensure as a registered pharmacist”—Chapter 47293 of the Administrative Code. The purpose of pharmacy internship program is to furnish those people who want to know how to become a pharmacist with the knowledge and practical experience essential for competently and effectively carrying out their responsibilities and functions upon licensure.

Individuals who are wondering how to become a pharmacist gain a supervised practical experience at the internship site. The practical experience or pharmacist internship is conducted in accordance with the National Association of Boards of Pharmacy-American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy. Any pharmacy that has a good license standing can become an internship site, and as the interns are having their internship program, a preceptor is expected to ensure that the interns are properly supervised and exposed to all aspects of the internship program to equip them with the skills and knowledge on how to become a responsible and licensed pharmacist.

Before anybody can have his pharmacy internship however, a registration as a pharmacy intern is required. A certification of registration as a pharmacy internship shall be issued solely for the purpose of permitting those individuals who want to know how to become a pharmacist to obtain the necessary practical experience for examination and registration as a pharmacist. The requirements to become eligible for pharmacy internship registration that individuals who desire to become a pharmacist must meet are:

1a. Having  completed 60 semester or ninety quarters hours of College and being or having enrolled in a school of pharmacy; or

b. Having obtained a first professional degree in pharmacy from a program that has been recognized and approved by the state of board of pharmacy; or

c.  Having established educational equivalency by attaining a Foreign Pharmacy Graduate Examination Commission certificate, and have proven proficiency in spoken English by successfully passing the Test of Spoken English or its equivalent.

2. A completed application form for registration as a pharmacy intern which can be obtained from state board of pharmacy office

Once the individuals who have gone beyond your stage of wondering how to become a pharmacist have met the requirements above, they must submit the requirement listed below to their respective state board of pharmacy:

1. An original transcript certifying that the applicant has successfully completed a minimum of 60 semesters or ninety quarter hours of college work together with

2. A certificate of enrollment into a school of pharmacy; the document must certify that the person is currently enrolled in a school of pharmacy and is actively working towards the requirements for licensure to become a pharmacist.

3. A completed application for provided by the board of pharmacy

4. Photograph of head and shoulders taken within the previous 6 months

5. Fee

Besides a pharmacy licensed as a terminal distributor of dangerous drugs, sites or fields such as manufacturing, research, consulting, drug information and drug utilization review can provide up to 500 hundred hours of internship credit. In order to receive credit for those experiences, a formal request should be submitted to the director of internship for approval prior to the start of the experience in such areas. The request must bear detailed description of the pharmacist internship such as time, place, responsibilities and duties, professional supervision and the name of the person supervising the experience. Finally, the request must be signed by both the intern and the person supervising the experience and it shall be returned with a written statement of preceptor.
